A sail is a tensile structure —made from fabric or other membrane materials—that uses wind power to propel sailing craft, including sailing ships , sailboats , windsurfers , ice boats , and even sail-powered land vehicles. Sails may be made from a combination of woven materials—including canvas or polyester cloth, laminated membranes or bonded filaments—usually in a three- or four-sided shape. A sail provides propulsive force via a combination of lift and drag, depending on its angle of attack —its angle with respect to the apparent wind. Apparent wind is the air velocity experienced on the moving craft and is the combined effect of the true wind velocity with the velocity of the sailing craft. Angle of attack is often constrained by the sailing craft’s orientation to the wind or point of sail. On points of sail where it is possible to align the leading edge of the sail with the apparent wind, the sail may act as an airfoil , generating propulsive force as air passes along its surface—just as an airplane wing generates lift —which predominates over aerodynamic drag retarding forward motion.

Last evening a very sudden knot squall ripped through the Newport area causing some nearly tragic capsizes and the sinking of 2 sailboats competing in the Tuesday Night Newport YC Series. They threw themselves at multiple distress situations. Well done to Ian Maccini and Becca Read for saving a crew on a swamped Ensign and especially to Peter Cronin who saved 3 people from an Alerion Express 28 that sank and another 2 people from an S-Boat that also sank. Peter then helped the swamped Ensign in photo to safety and assisted the harbormaster with other calls.
Bravo Zulu!!! See more See less. Comment on Facebook Last evening a very My friend took this photo on Saturday evening looking south from Prudence Island. That was another day of unsettled weather. Glad everyone is ok from last night. Bravo Sail Newport. Peter, so proud of you!

By Carly Stern For Dailymail. Typically, people meet for first dates at bars, restaurants, or coffee shops — not on islands in the Caribbean. American couple Jody, 49, and Daniel, 47, are clearly not most people. The twosome had never laid eyes on each other before when Jody decided to fly out and meet Daniel in Grenada, where he had made a stop with his sailboat. Together, they sailed around the Caribbean for three weeks — and hit it off so well that Jody decided to quit her job, sell all her stuff, and join Daniel to travel around the world together.
Click for love: Indiana native Jody, 49, met former Washington resident Daniel, 47, on the travel dating site MissTravel. Romantic: The two have been together for a year and travel the world together on Daniel’s boat. The risky move clearly paid off for the couple, who have been together for a year, sailing around and visiting over 55 islands so far.

It is hoped to be able to reschedule this event to a future date. WISC has evolved over the years, yet still holds dear the main values and goals instilled by its founders over 20 years ago. WISC is a one day keelboat event, which aims to encourage the participation of both novice and experienced female sailors.
